THIS WEEK IN LIVE MUSIC

June 17-23, 2019

Party people, let’s get to it:

Tonight, Petal is at Southgate, with Coping Skills as the opener. I don’t know about you, but I could certainly use more Coping Skills in my life.

Howard Jones and Men without Hats are at Bogart’s on Tuesday and Young the Giant and Fitz & The Tantrums (sounds like they could use Coping Skills too) are playing PNC Pavilion. If you were planning to go to the Rose Music Center in brick-laden Huber Heights for the gig with the rather unwieldy moniker of “Brian Wilson presents Pet Sounds: The Final Performances with special guests Al Jardine and Blondie Chapman” that show has been postponed until 8/13. Our friend Brian is having some issues.

Wednesday, the Robert Cray Band, Marc Cohn and the Blind Boys of Alabama are at Rose, Lizzo plays a sold out show at Madison Theater and The Claudettes are at Southgate with New Sincerity Trio and Mike Michel. And from the “when it reggaes, it pours” department, The Wailers are at Bogart’s and the Cliftones are playing a free gig at the Burnet Woods Bandstand… OMJ (Oh My Jah).

On Thursday, the Allman Betts Band is at Taft, with Stoll Vaughan as the opener.

Friday evening, it’s a sonic smorgasbord:

  • Gov’t Mule plays PNC with Nikki Lane as the opener.
  • Darrell Scott plays Southgate Sanctuary, and the Ruen Brothers with Mike & the Moonpies are in the Revival Room
  • Bogart’s has Southern Accents “the best Tom Petty Tribute” (but really this is the best Tom Petty tribute)
  • Local band Multimagic has their vinyl release show at Woodward
  • Randy Steffen plays Camp Springs Tavern
  • Ben Levin Trio is at Wiedemann Brewery
  • Fraze Pavilion in Kettering is hosting the Kings of Chaos: Lou Gramm, Dee Snider, Sebastian Bach, Warren DeMartini, Gilby Clarke, James LoMenzo, Matt Sorum and Kenny Aronoff. (I think this band lineup was assembled by someone throwing darts at a K-Tel “Rockin’ Hits of the 80s” album.)

On Saturday, O.A.R. plays Rose Music Center, Jake Speed & the Freddies play the 5th anniversary show at the Downtowne Listening Room, and Ben Levin Trio play the Symphony Hotel.

Sunday, the Electric Six plays Southgate, with Heavy Hinges opening up the show.

Go ahead, get out to a show!

Speaking of going to shows, it’s a shame that the Erika Wennerstrom Fountain Square gig was rained out on Saturday, but that didn’t stop a couple of members of our crew from creating their own “meet and greet” with Erika.

Meanwhile, list members Joe and Alison Sampson were having a wonderful time at the Vampire Weekend/Chicano Batman show.

The Hiss Golden Messenger show last Monday at the Taft Ballroom was fantastic.

And list member Dan Bockrath and I agree that the Charly Bliss show at Top Cats on Friday was the show of the year thus far.

(Dan had quite the week, he saw Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever in San Francisco on Monday too!)

Have a great week!
